Equipment

  • large skillet (preferably cast-iron)
  • wooden spoon
  • knife
  • cutting board

Ingredients

  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • pinch of salt
  • lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples evenly.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to bubble.
  • Add the apple slices to the skillet and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Stir gently to coat.
  • Sauté for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized.
  • Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Serve warm.

Notes

Use firm, slightly tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture. For a thicker sauce, mix 1 teaspoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water and stir in during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Adjust sugar depending on the sweetness of your apples. A cast-iron skillet provides the best caramelization.
