Ingredients
  

  • 1 egg white (heart paste)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (heart paste)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (heart paste)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (heart paste)
  • pink or red food coloring
  • 1 box vanilla or chocolate cake mix
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, whisk together egg white, sugar, flour, and melted butter until smooth. Add food coloring and transfer to a piping bag.
  • Place a heart template under parchment paper on a baking sheet. Pipe heart shapes and freeze for at least 20 minutes until set.
  • Prepare the cake batter according to package instructions using eggs, milk, water, and butter. Color a small portion of batter to match the heart design.
  • Spread the colored batter in a pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes. Cool slightly and cut heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  • Pour remaining batter over the frozen heart pattern and bake until set. Immediately invert onto a powdered-sugar-dusted towel and gently roll while warm.
  • Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla, then slowly add heavy cream and beat until stiff peaks form.
  • Unroll cooled cake, spread frosting evenly, place heart inserts inside, and carefully re-roll. Chill before slicing and serving.

Notes

Freeze the heart design before baking to keep edges sharp, and always roll the cake while warm to prevent cracking. Chill before slicing for the cleanest presentation. This cake roll can be made a day ahead for even better flavor.
