Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • Nonstick spray or butter for greasing

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, stir together the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it rest for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • Form the Dough
Add the flour and salt to a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead
Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape the Rolls
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a rectangle, fold in half, and arrange seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.
  • Second Rise
Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake
Brush the tops with melted butter. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush with more butter while warm.

Notes

  • Rising times may vary depending on room temperature.
  • Whole milk creates the richest texture, but alternatives work.
  • Kneading is key to achieving a soft, elastic dough.
  • Brushing with melted butter enhances flavor and color.
