Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (for sauce)
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • sliced pickles (optional)
  • shredded lettuce (optional)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, vinegar, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and diced onion. Cook until beef is browned and onion is soft, breaking up the meat. Drain excess grease.
  • Stir in garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to medium-low.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the beef and stir gently until melted and combined.
  • Lightly toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or oven until golden.
  • Spread special sauce on the bottom bun. Add the cheesy beef mixture, top with pickles and lettuce if desired, and cover with the top bun.
  • Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Drain the beef well to avoid soggy buns. Toasting the buns helps them hold the filling. The special sauce can be made up to 2 days ahead for deeper flavor. Best served immediately.
