Equipment

  • sharp knife
  • saucepan
  • spoon
  • parchment paper
  • tray or baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 3–4 fresh oranges or mandarins
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1–2 tbsp orange zest (optional)
  • powdered sugar or fine granulated sugar, for coating

Instructions

  • Slice the oranges into thin, even rounds about 1/8–1/4 inch thick, removing any seeds.
  • In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves.
  • Add the orange slices (and zest if using) to the syrup. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 15–20 minutes, until the slices are soft and translucent.
  • Carefully remove the slices from the syrup and place them on a parchment-lined tray in a single layer.
  • Allow the slices to begin drying, then lightly dust with powdered or fine sugar once they start to firm.
  • Let the candies dry completely for at least 2 hours, or until no longer sticky, before serving or storing.

Notes

Use ripe, juicy oranges for the best flavor and aroma. Keep the syrup at a low simmer to avoid bitterness, and allow the slices to dry fully before storing to prevent stickiness. Patience during drying ensures the best texture and shine.
